Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course



Course duration & governing body:

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is 03 years duration course which includes 02 ½ years of theoretical & practical ab-inito training related to basic knowledge of aircraft components and its troubleshooting, minor modification, minor repair which is of ICAO Type – II standard and followed by 06 months On the Job training in any DGCA approved maintenance organization.

In an academic year, only one batch is permitted by Director General of Civil Aviation for admission into AME course. Every year in the month of July, a fresh batch is inducted which consist of 30 students each in mechanical and avionics stream respectively.

In India any activities related to Civil Aviation is regulated and governed by Director General of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India New Delhi. The aircraft maintenance engineering is a Licenced course which is governed by Director General of Civil Aviation.


Examination & certification:

There are 02 types of examination conducted for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course:

Semester Examination:

Semester examination is conducted twice in a year at the end of each semester by the AME training institute. To complete the 03 years duration of aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course the student has to undergo 05 semesters of in house training which includes theory and practical classes. The passing percentage for promotion to next semester is 70%.  After the successful completion of all 05 semesters followed by 06 months On Job Training, will lead the candidate to award with a course completion certificate.

DGCA Licence Examination:

The regulatory authority of Indian civil aviation, DGCA conducts licence examination for aircraft maintenance engineering students 03 times in a year i.e Feb Session, June session & October session.  The candidates are permitted to appear in licence examination only after gaining the required aeronautical experience and successful completion of the prescribed semester. To become successful Licenced aircraft maintenance engineer the student is required to pass the licence examination conducted by DGCA in prescribed stream. The passing percentage in licence examination is 70 %.

The students opted for Mechanical stream will be applicable to clear the licence examination papers as per the syllabus prescribed by DGCA to issue Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Licence in their respective branch.


  • Paper – I (Civil Aviation Rules and Regulation, Human Factor, CAR M, CAR 145)
  • Paper – II (General Engineering and Maintenance Practices)
  • Paper – III (Light aircraft)
  • Paper – III (Piston Engine)
  • Paper – III (Heavy Aircraft)
  • Paper – III (Jet Engine)
  • Paper – III (Rotary aircraft)

 

The students opted for Avionics stream will be applicable to clear the licence examination papers as per the syllabus prescribed by DGCA to issue Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Licence in their respective branch.

  • Paper – III (Instrument System)
  • Paper – III (Radio & Navigation System)


To become a successful Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in addition to the above mentioned papers the students are also required to clear RTR (Aero) certificate of proficiency examination being conducted by Wireless and Planning Cell, Ministry of Communication, Govt. of India.

The pattern of the Licence examination has been amended by Director General of Civil Aviation to meet the international standard and for recognition and harmonization of Licence Holder privilege worldwide. The new pattern is called CAR 66 which is equivalent to EASA 66, CAR 147 approved ab-initio training and licensing programme. This will facilitate the candidate to work in international market without undergoing licence conversion procedure.
